The Colours of my Guitar

"The guitarist, but also the human being that he is, appealed to me with his musical qualities, and especially because of the very strong motivation that radiates from his person. Paul will always seek the best of himself; for the benefit of his art!"
Roland Dyens, Professor of Guitar, Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, France.

Recitals

The solo concerts show the guitar's repertoire as a journey through time and space. Beginning with an improvisation, I continue with music from European composers such as J S Bach, F Sor and Weiss. Then there is a move either towards the West or the East including Japanese and South American music.
Halfway through I play my own music, best described as sound poems. The inspiration for these pieces comes from all over the world and has elements of Brazilian, Indian and South European music in them. I use the guitar as a palette where each key has a special colour shaping the sound and performance of the music.
At the end of the concert we come back to the beginning so the journey is completed as a circle.

In 1997 composer James Erber  wrote "Am Grabe Memphis Minnies" for me. The piece, which is a tribute to blues singer Memphis Minnie and composer Franz Schubert, is a journey in five sections stretching the guitar to its limits in terms of sound and dynamics. A few words about the music (please click on the title below to hear it):

Awakening is the first movement from my suite called "Episodes for Guitar". It is a meditation on a dreamlike state of mind which includes harmonics, percussive effects such as imitation of the Brazilian Berimbau instrument and Tambora in the right hand together with hammer on played melody with the left hand. As in a dream where you can have many different images, the piece changes direction all the time including key, from D major to D minor.

"Episodes for Guitar" had its first performance at The International Music Festival at St. Ives, Cambridgeshire UK August 2000.
